The Spur Ranch
The Spur Ranch, owned and operated by Master Horseman Gary Myers, is located in the stunning Ruby Valley in Southwest Montana. This regenerative, bird-friendly 160-acre ranch sits at the foot of the Ruby Mountains and is fed by the pristine waters of Ramshorn Creek.
The biodiversity of the Ruby Valley is unmatched due to its being mostly privately owned lands with minimal development where wild animals can migrate freely. The horse and cattle herds raised here enjoy clean water and native grasses cultivated without chemicals.
On any given day, visitors can watch foxes traipse across the hillsides, elk wander down to sneak into the haystack, red tailed hawks circling from above the cottonwood trees, and Sandhill Cranes nesting in the fields.
The horses raised here become accustomed to wildlife, dogs, machinery, and people which makes them level-headed partners in the arena and on the trails. The Spur Ranch specializes in breeding and training performance, ranch, and trail horses, raising grassfed Akaushi cattle, and facilitating unique horsemanship experiences in an authentic setting.

Mission and Values
Gary’s highest goal is to put good people with good horses. At the Spur Ranch, we believe champion-level horses are made through a combination of excellent training and carefully selected bloodlines. They are further supported by healthy pastures and a natural herd environment.
We value the Vaquero horseman and the Western horseman traditions passed down by Master Horsemen Tom and Bill Dorrance, Ray Hunt, and Buck Brannaman. This “True Horsemanship through Feel” method works with the natural life energy and physical ability of the horse in a way that establishes clear communication between horse and rider. This method has proven to produce safe and sound horse partners.
We also value serving the community by producing top quality beef for family and friends. A percentage of our products are donated to the local food banks and directly to local families.

Gary Myers
Micaela Young, PhD
Principal Owner and Operator
Gary Myers, Master Horseman and retired Oilman, established the Spur Ranch with a dream of selecting the best bloodlines to build a herd of excellent ranch horses. Gary grew up in Ennis, Montana and became a renowned hunting and fishing guide who was trusted to guide Hollywood A-listers, businessmen, and other intrepid adventure types. Gary earned the Orvis Flyfishing Guide award due to his knowledge of the area and technical skill in fly fishing and rafting. Gary studied colt starting and making refined bridle horses under Ray Hunt and alongside his childhood friend, Buck Brannaman. Gary spent twenty years working the oil fields on the North Slope of Alaska and retired to once again live out his dream of building one of the best horse herds imaginable. Gary’s horses have gone on to the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) and are sought after by the world’s most reputable horsemen and women and by practical horsemen who need solid mounts for packing, hunting, guiding, and wildlife management. Gary oversees the ranch operations and the breeding program and guides clients through selecting the best horses for their intended uses, temperament, and skill level.
Trainer and Co-operator
Micaela Young started her horsemanship journey on her family’s farm in Southern Idaho where they trained quarter horses for ranch work. She put her horsemanship journey on hold to complete her Master’s and Doctorate degrees at Montana State University and to build her professional career that focuses on agriculture. Micaela attended packing and guiding courses through Yellowstone Horse and Mule Outfitters and Royal Tine Outfitters, and obtained a packing and guiding certification through Swan Mountain Wilderness Guide School. Micaela has studied under Gary Myers since 2024, learning colt starting and the finer points of horsemanship. Micaela enjoys handling young horses for the purpose of gentling and building strong connections between horses and humans. After being injured on horseback in the Patagonian wilderness, she has a deep empathy for riders seeking to find their way back to horses after injuries or long pauses due to careers or other life events.
